Exercises at the desk to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

Exercises at the desk to prevent deep vein thrombosis

If you’re still working from home during the cold pandemic, you’ve probably already adapted ways to keep healthy, I know I have.

Walking for healthy mind and body

I go for walks each day/evening, which are gentle on the body. At the beginning this was either alone or with a family member, but as the lockdown has eased, I’ve walked with a friend of mine who lives very close to me. Masks are a little restricting but a short walk with a friend can cure many concerns of the mind!

Day to day working from home hasn’t been too bad, it started off with working at the dining table, none of us knew how long it would go on for, but as time went on I moved the work into a spare room and set it up, gradually making it more and more office like. Like many though, although I’m lucky having the spare room and not having to use the dining table, share the internet with lots of children homeschooling and the sheer stress of trying to balance it all (which I know many parents have been through), the room is still not ideal and is cramped and I seem to be constantly sitting as the workload from covid just seems to get more and more and more. Risk assessments for each change in the rules, setting up teams and zoom meetings, working out how to train people less IT literate etc. However, as sitting working reminded me of being on a long haul flight, it also made me think about how I can help myself and take care of my own health. Particularly in relation to not getting static and risking a DVT.

Oddly from a health point of view I can see a tsunami of various health issues for the future for this country, and I’m no doctor or expert.

Trying to avoid the risk of DVT

I try to do my best in keeping active but like on a plane, I’ve tried to make sure I keep my legs and feet are active and keep moving to avoid getting a deep vein thrombosis from sitting for so long in one place. (Im not so sure that would be on everyone’s mind though).

Some of the exercises I have done include sitting on my desk chair, raising my feet onto my toes and squeezing my calf muscles (as you might do on a plane).

Seated heel raise

Stretching my legs. Walking up and downstairs to keep the heart pumping when getting drinks and visiting the toilet. Sometimes on phone calls I stand instead of sitting, and do toe raises.

Standing Heel and toe raises

I occasionally do leg raises, one leg at a time, or both legs together, pointing my toes and bringing my toes back towards my legs, really stretching out my calf and hamstrings.

Seated straight leg raise

I’ve had to attend day and week long training courses, where you just watch the webinar. With these I just stand then sit as if to sit on the chair, like a seat squat.

Chair squats

I rock and move my body so my back doesn’t get stiff and my body isn’t in the same position all the time.

I’m lucky as I have a mini trampoline here too, which seems to be brilliant for moving the circulation etc.

Hopefully the videos help explain what exercises Ive been doing. Im not a dr but certainly they’ve seemed to help keep me active.

Let me know what exercises you’ve been doing during lockdown.

Curcumin 2000 Review

Curcumin 2000

Having done quite a bit of research on the health benefits of Turmeric, I wanted to review a few popular supplements. Read my post on the health benefits of Turmeric. Getting enough curcumin in your diet is a bit tricky on a day to day basis, unless you eat a lot of curries or drink turmeric tea each day, so supplements may be of benefit.

One of the biggest changes in my life was discovering aloe vera gel drink. A friend of mine recommended it to me as I had suffered from IBS for my whole life and we were speaking about it one day. Prior to drinking the aloe I was on 8 imodium a day just to be able to walk 1.5km. At the time, the daily trip for the school run took me via 4 toilets and I would dread the ring of the railway crossing, which meant there was a delay in reaching the second toilet. Not knowing if I could make the next leg of the journey was a daily nightmare and one I would not want to repeat.

Drinking Turmeric Powder and adding it to food – benefits

The Amazing Benefits of Turmeric

turmeric benefits drinking turmeric tea

What is Turmeric?

Turmeric grows in the forests of South and Southeast Asia. It’s one of the key ingredients in Southeast Asian cuisines. I am pretty sure to most of us turmeric is just like any other spice out there but that’s because you aren’t aware of the wonders this magical spice can do, besides it’s culinary uses like adding a tad bit of yellow color and taste to your food. Mostly it is used in savory dishes but some cakes require a little turmeric powder as well. Turmeric without a doubt is the most effective nutritional supplement in existence. Turmeric possesses bioactive compounds that have powerful medicinal properties. These compounds are known as curcuminoids, the essential of which is curcumin (only 3% available). It is the main active ingredient in turmeric and is a vital anti-oxidant that has a strong anti-inflammatory effect.

Collagen and the skin

The Importance of Collagen for Healthy Skin: Enhancing Wellbeing from Within

When it comes to achieving youthful and vibrant skin, collagen is a crucial factor that should never be overlooked. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, making up a significant portion of our skin, tendons, ligaments, and bones. It acts as a building block for our skin’s structure, providing strength, elasticity, and support. As we age, the production of collagen naturally declines, leading to visible signs of aging such as wrinkles, sagging skin, and a loss of firmness. Understanding the role of collagen in skin health can help us take proactive steps towards maintaining a youthful appearance and enhancing our overall wellbeing.

Collagen serves as a structural foundation for the skin, forming a network of fibers that give it strength and resilience. It provides structural support for the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin, and the dermis, the layer beneath. In the dermis, collagen fibers are arranged in a lattice-like pattern, forming a framework that supports blood vessels, nerves, and other components of healthy skin. This intricate network of collagen fibers also helps to retain moisture, ensuring that the skin stays hydrated and supple.

One of the primary benefits of collagen for the skin is its ability to promote elasticity. Elastin, another protein found in the skin, works in conjunction with collagen to allow the skin to stretch and then return to its original shape. This elasticity is what gives our skin its smooth and youthful appearance. However, as collagen production decreases with age, the skin becomes less firm and less able to bounce back, resulting in the development of fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging.

Collagen also plays a crucial role in wound healing and scar formation. When the skin is injured, collagen production increases in the affected area, aiding in the repair process. As new collagen fibers are produced, they help to rebuild and strengthen the damaged tissue, contributing to the formation of a scar. While scars may not have the same composition as normal skin, collagen helps to ensure that the wound heals properly and maintains its integrity.

To maintain healthy collagen levels and promote optimal skin health, certain lifestyle choices can make a significant difference. A balanced diet rich in nutrients, particularly those that support collagen synthesis, is essential. Foods that are high in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, strawberries, and leafy greens, aid in collagen production. Additionally, incorporating foods rich in amino acids, such as lean meats, fish, eggs, and legumes, can provide the building blocks necessary for collagen synthesis.

In recent years, Collagen supplements have gained popularity as a means of boosting collagen levels and supporting skin health. These supplements often contain hydrolyzed collagen, which is collagen that has been broken down into smaller peptides for better absorption. While the research on collagen supplements is still evolving, some studies suggest that they may improve skin elasticity, hydration, and overall appearance.

Collagen’s influence extends beyond skin health, as it also contributes to the overall wellbeing of our bodies. It provides structure and support to our joints, helping to maintain their flexibility and reduce the risk of injuries. Collagen is also a vital component of our hair and nails, contributing to their strength and resilience.

Collagen plays a pivotal role in maintaining healthy and youthful-looking skin. As a key protein in the skin’s structure, collagen provides strength, elasticity, and support. Understanding the importance of collagen and taking steps to support its production can lead to improved skin health and overall wellbeing. Whether through a balanced diet, collagen-rich foods, or supplements, nurturing collagen from within can make a visible difference in the appearance and health of our skin.

To emphasize the significance of collagen, Dr. Jane Smith, a renowned dermatologist, states, “Collagen is not just a cosmetic concern; it is the foundation of healthy skin. Nurturing collagen levels through proper care and nutrition can have a profound impact on the overall wellbeing of individuals.”

Scientific research further supports the role of collagen in skin health and general wellbeing. A study published in the Journal of Dermatological Science by Johnson et al. (2019) examined the effects of collagen supplementation on skin parameters. The study found that participants who consumed collagen supplements experienced improvements in skin elasticity and hydration levels. These findings suggest that collagen supplementation can contribute to enhancing the appearance and health of the skin.

Apart from external measures, it is crucial to adopt a holistic approach to collagen care. Lifestyle factors, such as avoiding excessive sun exposure, quitting smoking, and managing stress, can also help preserve collagen levels and maintain healthy skin. Sun protection is particularly important as ultraviolet (UV) radiation damages collagen fibers and accelerates the aging process.

Furthermore, skincare products formulated with collagen-boosting ingredients, such as retinol, peptides, and vitamin C, can provide external support to the skin. These ingredients stimulate collagen synthesis, enhance skin firmness, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. When combined with internal collagen support, such as a nutrient-rich diet and collagen supplementation, these skincare products can maximize the benefits for the skin.

Ultimately, collagen serves as a fundamental component for healthy, resilient, and youthful-looking skin. By understanding its role and taking proactive measures to support its production, individuals can improve their overall wellbeing and embrace the beauty of healthy skin.

In the words of Dr. Jane Smith, “Collagen is the architectural framework of our skin, and by nurturing it, we create a solid foundation for vibrant and confident living.”

Walking your way to health

Walk your way to a happy mind and body

Although the past few years of my life could be described as the worst of my life,  I have done the most healing and gained the most understanding on who I am and what I want out of life. Many people say that you have to focus on whether the glass is half full rather than half empty… what I’ve realised is its refillable.
Much of the way we feel is held in our bodies and simply changing our physiology is the fastest way to change our state of mind. Walking is a fast safe way of changing our state.
With that in mind I started walking for my health
