Over 40? Weight loss is still possible

Weight Loss at 40

It’s true that metabolism begins to slow down as we age, and it can become harder to keep weight off than once before. But this is no reason to assume it’s a lost cause or that our metabolism doesn’t work anymore.

In fact, there are some great ways to keep your system running well no matter your age! Below are two of my quick tips for how to boost metabolism — especially when you’re over 40. Read on to find out how.

Eat real, whole foods (with plenty of protein and fibre!)

Healthy eating over 40

It seems like common sense, but eating enough whole foods each day is so important for combatting aging and maintaining a healthy metabolism.

Aim to get plenty of fibre per day from sources like whole grains, beans, fruits, and lots of fresh fruits and veggies. You’ll also want to eat foods rich in lean protein to stay full and fuel your muscles, which help you burn more calories.

Do strength and cardio exercises

The loss of lean muscle mass is also a factor in aging. And since muscle burns three times more calories than fat, losing muscle can make it more difficult to lose weight.
But don’t worry! You can continue to boost your metabolism by maintaining your muscle content. Try adding in some weight lifting exercises a few times per week — and don’t forget about cardio. Think about combining some daily walking with interval training to really fuel your metabolism.
